Jargon the specific use of certain terms defines and distinguishes a profession. As the Bellardos noted in their preface to their 1992 glossary, "terminology serves to mark the current limits of professional concerns and responsibilities."1 Since the publication of the Bellardos' glossary, the archival profession has experienced profound changes that warrant a reassessment of those limits. Over the last ten years, academics and practitioners refined and rearticulated core archival concepts. Writings about appraisal introduced many new terms, including micro appraisal, functional analysis, and context analysis. Encoded archival description, a revolutionary change in a fundamental archival function, incorporated a number of technical terms such as DTD and XML into the archival lexicon, and elaborated concepts such as archival cataloging and finding aid. Possibly the most significant impact on archival language and professional boundaries resulted from the challenges of electronic records. E-records forced archivists into collaborations with different disciplines. In response, archivists adopted terms from information technology, publishing, and knowledge management. They began to grapple with born-digital documents and to become familiar with arcane aspects of technology used to record and authenticate electronic documents, such as ciphers, encryption keys, and encoding schemes. At the same time, other professions adopted sometimes appropriated archival terms. The very word that identifies the profession, archives, took on the meaning of offline storage and backup. I believe that, at a fundamental level, the basic concepts of records and recordkeeping are not antiquated. They remain vital and important. However, the language of records is often tied to a paper realm, emphasizing physical qualities over functional characteristics. The challenge is to re-articulate the essential characteristics of those concepts in terms that make sense in a vastly different environment.
DNA was extracted from the bone component of 15 undecalcified cryostat sections 20 m thick ; of each iliac biopsy using a Nucleon DNA extraction kit Scotlab, Glasgow, UK ; 13 ; . After extraction, DNA was precipitated in ethanol and pelleted. The ethanol supernatant was treated with 0.2 mol L sodium acetate at 20 C overnight and then pelleted. Both pellets were solubilized in TBE and loading buffer before being run on a 1.5% agarose gel at 20 volts overnight approximately 10 g DNA was loaded per sample ; . A 100-bp standard was included as a reference. The gel was incubated in ethidium bromide before visualization with ultraviolet light and image capture Eagle eye transilluminator, Stratagene, Cambridge, UK.

Researchers walked from residential to commercial areas in Boston and Columbus. They found that people who walk or bike to work near thoroughfares traveled by diesel vehicles are exposed to high levels of pollutants. To unveil the report, the Allegheny County Partnership to Reduce Diesel Pollution held a press conference on February 28, 2007. During the conference we: 1. Called for citizens to continue reporting illegal idling of diesel vehicles to the health department and municipal police. 2. Asked that the City of Pittsburgh adopt a policy to retrofit their entire diesel fleet. 3. Supported paying for transit retrofits with Local, State, and Federal funds. 4. Called for the PA DEP to reserve a fund specifically allocated for diesel retrofit projects around the state. 5. Asked that the Federal EPA adopt an engine rebuild rule. Such a rule would require owners operators of longhaul diesel trucks to install Diesel Particulate Filters and Closed Crankcase Ventilation Systems at the time of their mid-life engine rebuild. We were lucky to be joined at our press conference by Dr. David Eibling, professor of otolaryngology head and neck surgery ; in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Chief of Otolaryngology at the VA hospital. Dr. Eibling summed it up best in his talk when he said.

Bioflavonoids: plant-derived bioflavonoids are believed to affect collagen structure by protecting it from free radical destruction and cross-linking directly with the collagen fibers.
What are bioflavonoids
From potential physiological substrates such as the cysteinyl leukotriene LTC4, and 17 -estradiol 17 D-glucuronide ; E217 G ; , to substrates of toxicological relevance such as the exo and endo GSH conjugates of the mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 Hipfner et al., 1999a ; . The mechanisms by which MRP1 and P-glycoprotein transport unconjugated xenobiotics and thereby decrease cellular drug accumulation in human tumor cells are very different. P-glycoprotein has been shown to directly bind and transport drugs to which it confers resistance, whereas MRP1 does not Loe et al., 1996; Sharom, 1997 ; . Instead, MRP1 seems to efflux some xenobiotics e.g., vincristine, daunorubicin ; through a cotransport mechanism with reduced glutathione GSH ; Loe et al., 1998; Rappa et al., 1999; Renes et al., 1999 ; . In addition to enhancing direct transport of some MRP1 substrates, GSH has been shown to increase the potency of certain compounds to inhibit conjugated organic anion transport activity by MRP1. For example, transport of LTC4 is poorly inhibited by vincristine or verapamil alone but in the presence of GSH, inhibition by these drugs is enhanced more than 20-fold Loe et al., 1996, 1998, 2000 ; . The flavonoids are a large group of polyphenolic antioxidants found in vegetables, fruits, and beverages such as tea and wine. In addition to their well known antioxidant effects, flavonoids have a broad range of biological activities that includes inhibition of tyrosine kinases and serine threonine kinases Akiyama et al., 1987 ; , topoisomerase II Yamashita et al., 1990 ; , and the drug-metabolizing cytochromes P450 1A1 2 Edenharder et al., 1997 ; , as well as activation of p53 Plaumann et al., 1996 ; and the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator CFTR ; chloride channel Illek et al., 1999 ; . Furthermore, flavopiridol, a synthetic flavone currently in phase I clinical trials as an antineoplastic agent, has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of several cyclindependent kinases, including CDK2 and CDK4 Carlson et al., 1996 ; . Natural flavonoids are abundant in a normal diet and are also available commercially, marketed as antioxidant tablets. Flavonoids are generally thought to have many beneficial health effects, including antiproliferative and anticarcinogenic effects Le Marchand et al., 2000 ; but recently, it has been suggested that maternal ingestion of these compounds may contribute to infant leukemia through a mechanism proposed to involve topoisomerase II Strick et al., 2000 ; . Mega-dose quantities of certain flavonoids are frequently ingested by healthy individuals as antioxidant supplements and by cancer patients as a form of alternative or complementary therapy. Consequently, it is important to know whether these compounds affect the function of proteins involved in drug metabolism and or transport because this may have a significant impact on the physiological functions carried out by these proteins and possibly, the pharmacokinetics and thus efficacy of chemotherapy. In the present study, we have investigated several bioflavonoids for their ability to modulate the transport, ATPase, and drug resistance-conferring activities of MRP1. We found that the effects of flavonoids on these activities were variable, and that the ability of a flavonoid to modulate one activity of MRP1 was not necessarily linked to its ability to modulate another activity of the protein. Our results also indicate that the flavonoids should be considered individually rather than as a class of and bleomycin.

Patients of both sexes, age 18 years or older, with a major depressive episode referred to as the index episode ; were entered in the study. To be eligible for the acute treatment phase of the study, a patient had to satisfy the following criteria: 1 ; a current major depressive episode that met DSM-III-R criteria, 2 ; a score of at least 15 points on the 21-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 24 ; , 3 ; a score of 4 "moderately ill" ; or more on the Clinical Global Impression CGI ; scale for severity of illness 25 ; , 4 ; no acute suicidal ideation, 5 ; failure to respond to an adequate trial of either a nonselective antidepressant or an SSRI criteria for an adequate trial are given later ; , 6 ; not more than four lifetime depressive episodes and not more than two depressive episodes in the 5 years before the index episode, 7 ; no history of hypomanic or manic episode, 8 ; no other DSM-III-R axis I diagnosis, and 9 ; no medical exclusions for any condition incompatible with lithium therapy. To be eligible for the continuation treatment phase, patients had to satisfy criteria for remission during a 6-week period after initiation of lithium augmentation. Diagnoses were verified by using a checklist for DSM-III-R criteria for major depressive disorder. Consensus diagnoses were made at a conference of the supervising psychiatrist and the research psychiatrist by using additional information about the patient from a semistructured diagnostic interview, including demographic characteristics, psychiatric history, and the results of a physical examination, a urine screen for illegal drugs, and routine laboratory tests.

The basis of active design with constant change and democratic display as guiding principles. Similar formats can be found in workplace backrooms, or on a smaller scale, office bulletin boards. These are all specially adorned places within a larger spatial configuration of authority that organizes daily living and working structures, not unlike the room of one's own an artist temporarily inhabits when staging an exhibition in an art institution. The installation system with which Tillmans authors his exposure of continuity and change is structurally evocative of a constellation or universe. This analogy is fitting; he had a youthful obsession with astronomy. The subject matter of astronomy is the universe as a whole, an investigation of the positions, dimensions, distribution, motion, composition, energy, and evolutions of celestial bodies and phenomena, as well as the influence they exert upon each other. Tillmans's universe consists of images. Exhibited photographs are arranged in configurations that flow into one another, determined by points of contact that range from formal features such as a color or shape, to symbolic connections, to ephemeral qualities derived from the artist's internal formations, including memory. He investigates how, over time, and differently at various moments and in diverse places, these bodies change, and act upon one another. In Tillmans's exhibitory system, fluidity and relational associations are vital. Tillmans performs the installation of his work as subtly calibrated orchestrations within which every conceptual and concrete feature is engaged specifically and holistically. Determining layers consist of the particular material to be exposed, the site of exposure and communication with all the term site implies ; , and the artist's introspection regards to both photographic pool history, genre, memory, meaning ; and site as interior space, institution, city, metaphor ; . Tillmans explains, "Some days before an exhibition I make the final selection of all the and bortezomib.

The advent of portable IC has allowed for measurement of more realistic simulations of everyday activities. To our knowledge, this study is the first to examine the validity and reliability of one of those new hand-held devices for estimating energy expenditure in comparison with simultaneous IC measurements in obese adults. The SWA device was user-friendly for the subjects in terms of easy attachment detachment, minimal discomfort, and little or no interference in activity. The present study showed that REE measurement using the SWA in obese subjects was underestimated by a mean value of 8.8%. The magnitude of the difference in REE between the SWA and IC appeared to increase as the REE increased across individual participants in this study, a finding that is consistent with that of Jakicic et al. 12 ; . However, a highly significant correlation was demonstrated between the REE SWA ; estimates and the measured values by IC. In addition, high correlation and and bosentan.

A 31-year-old Taiwanese woman, who from her medical history was generally well, presented with 1 slowly enlarging elevated plaque on the posterior aspect of her right shoulder. This had first been detected 3 months before the visit to our clinic. The lesion had originated as a small, tender, erythematous papule and had since grown into a large confluent plaque with satellite papules. She claimed that the lesion was increasing in size, and this was accompanied by intense itching and fever. On physical examination, there was 1 palm-sized, dusky red, elastic firm plaque on the right shoulder. The main lesion was surrounded by multiple 2- to 8-mm erythematous satellite papules Figure 1 ; . There were no palpable cervical, supraclavicular, axillary, or inguinal lymph nodes. A systemic workup that included head, neck, and chest computed tomographic scans showed no involvement of other organs. Workups done to determine the source of her febrile episodes yielded no evidence of active infection. The only abnormal laboratory finding was polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia found on serum protein electrophoresis. An incisional biopsy was performed. Microscopically, a dense dermal infiltrate extended from the upper dermis deep to the subcutis Figure 2 ; . The infiltrating cells were mainly composed of histiocytes with large vesicular nuclei. They also had abundant cytoplasm with spidery borders. Neutrophils, lymphocytes, and plasma cells were scattered between the histiocytes, and the presence of lymphocytes engulfed within the histiocytic cytoplasm, a feature called emperipolesis, was also noted. The mixed infiltration was neutrophil predominant. Immunohistochemical studies revealed histiocytes that stained positively for S100 protein and CD-68. Notably, the dermis surrounding the histiocytes was infiltrated by numerous neutrophils. Clinically and histologically, she was diagnosed as having cutaneous Rosai-Dorfman disease CRD ; . Before visiting our hospital, she had been treated at a dermatologic clinic for 2 months, first with topical triamcinolone, oral prednisolone 30 mg d ; , and then and botox.

CW: The Mel Gibson movie about the Scots, about William -- SM: William Wallace, yes. Braveheart, which is about a thousand years ago, but that schism between the English and the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh goes back well beyond that, and so even back that far you have people on the English side -- and the English wrote the history books -- who are their enemies. When they came to this country, the English settled on the Eastern seaboard where it looks right--it's the flatlands--and the Irish, Scots, Welsh, and Cornishmen all went to the mountains because that's where they lived back home, and they settled from North Alabama where the mountains begin all the way through Alberta, Canada, right through New York, by the way, and Vermont. That's all Celtic America. So that sort of cultural divide was maintained. The people had the same opinions that they always had. One thing that struck me when I was in Ireland, I went to this museum . the Famine Museum. Twenty percent of Ireland either died or immigrated as a result [of the potato famine] but here's the kicker: during the years of the potato famine, when 20% of the people were lost, Ireland was exporting food. Exporting! In the museum, there's a cartoon taken from the British humor magazine "Punch, " which is published in London . accompanying an editorial which was explaining why Ireland should not receive aid, because [the Irish] were so lazy they would get even more shiftless. The cartoon showed a wooden cabin with a porch, and on the porch were two guys in overalls and great big hats and between them was a bloodhound, asleep, and a jug. That's the hillbilly image, but it was 1840, and it was Ireland! And the purpose of the cartoon essentially was genocide. CW: Wow. SM: Yeah. When you realize where the stereotype came from and how it was used, then you realize what you're dealing with. CW. In The Ballad of Frankie Silver, you make us think about the court's prejudice against mountain people, and you also make us think about capital punishment. SM: Yes, that's why I had to have a modern component to the story, to remind you that this is not just an historical story.
