Its prevalence and pathogenicity has been increasingly noticed worldwide and Portugal is no exception. It is estimated that about 150.000 persons are chronically infected in our country. Methods: The authors reviewed the clinical records of 57 HCV infected patients treated at the Infectious Diseases Unit during a four-year period 2002-2005 ; , which represented 19% of total Hepatitis C patients followed at our Unit. Demographic characteristics, epidemiology, genotype, serum HCV RNA, histological findings, CD4 cell count, side effects and sustained virological response were analysed. Twenty-one patients were excluded from response to treatment analysis due to uncompleted follow up. Results: 47 82, 4% ; were male and mean age was 36 years; large majority was Caucasian 96, 4% ; . Nine patients presented HIV co-infection, mean CD4 cell count was 495 cells mm3. The authors found 44 77.9% ; IDU and in 9 16.0% ; the risk factor remained unclear. HCV genotype 1 was largely represented 74% ; followed by genotype 3 19% ; . Thirty-six patients 63% ; had high HCV basal viral load 800.000.UI ml ; and weighted less than 75 Kg. Ten patients had history of major alcohol intake. Hepatic needle biopsy has been performed in 47 patients and METAVIR staging system disclosed the following distribution: F3 - 23, F2 - 14, F1 - 8, F4 - 2. Results The pretreatment characteristics of the 14 patients treated with letrozole are listed in Table 1.
