Our Animal Welfare Awards recognise employees who have made outstanding advances in implementing the 3Rs. In 2006 a research team looking at smoking cessation products, received the award for reducing by 40 percent the number of rats used in studies into the addictive properties of smoking products. Sharing best practice We fund the UK National Centre for the 3Rs' NC3Rs ; prize which recognises the best new techniques for implementing the 3Rs. In 2006, the 10, 000 prize money was won for a technique that reduced the number of mice subjected to an invasive procedure used in bacterial disease research. Together with industry partners in the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, we are funding a three-year job post at the NC3Rs to encourage sharing of best practice. In 2006, we donated our internal guide to refining the collection of blood samples from laboratory animals. This is now available for free on the NC3Rs website. We are involved in many other initiatives to encourage research into the 3Rs and to stimulate the sharing of best practice on animal research. In 2006, GSK: Took part in working groups run by the NC3Rs on replacing and reducing the use of primates in research Supported the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare's projects to improve housing and husbandry for laboratory animals Participated in the European RSPCA, FRAME and industry initiative to reduce the use of dogs in safety testing Supported the National Academy's Institute of Laboratory Animal Research and the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing in the US.

Lished results ; . If DPC R1 is metabolized by the corresponding orthologs in the chimpanzee, an over-expression of 1A-like activity in the chimpanzee liver could potentially increase the hepatic extraction of DPC R1 in this species. Thus, whereas systemic clearance would be unaffected by this change in hepatic extraction, oral bioavailability F ; would be decreased to a level similar to those effects observed for propranolol. A lower bioavailability would result in a higher oral clearance in chimpanzees when compared with humans, since oral clearance by definition is CLs F. This is consistent with estimates of DPC R1 oral clearance for chimpanzees and humans presented in Table 6. In contrast to DPC R1, DPC 423 appears to be a low clearance compound in the chimpanzee based upon its systemic clearance and meropenem.

The use of near-infrared NIR ; spectroscopy has grown dramatically over the past two decades, chiefly owing to the advances in the robustness and ease of use of the instrumentation and the availability of high quality chemometrics with which to process the data. In addition, NIR spectroscopy can often be used to analyse samples directly without the need for any preparation. These attributes have made the technique well suited for production control purposes for many different products, including foodstuffs, 1 textiles, 2 polymers3 and pharmaceuticals.4 As early as 1968, Sherken5 of the US Food and Drugs Administration reported the use of an NIR based assay for meprobamate in tablet mixtures and commercially available preparations, but it involved grinding the tablets before analysis. The accuracy of the NIR method was comparable to that of the official National Formulary method. Since then, NIR spectroscopy has been growing in use in the pharmaceutical industry both on the production floor and in the laboratory and has been used for the analysis of powder blends, granules and milled tablets.6 A large step forward was the development of methods to analyse solid dosage formulations without grinding or extraction, and in 1987 Lodder et al.7 analysed adulterated and unadulterated capsules using NIR spectroscopy directly. More recently, the identification of active drugs in tablets has been reported.8 The potential for on-line or at-line identification, qualification and quantification of the final dosage form therefore became a reality. As the use of NIR spectroscopy grew, the importance of sample presentation was recognised, particularly in the positioning of the dosage form in the spectrometer. Specially constructed.

On theoretical grounds the natural history of ovarian cancer contraindicates these radical surgical procedures. How ever, in rare instances when tumor re currence is late and limited entirely to the pelvis, more radical surgery may be chosen. Endometrioid cancer, for ex ample, which appears to be less aggres sive than other epithelial ovarian can cers, especially in its potential for me tastases, may lend itself to this approach. Long and Taylor reported that only 30 percent of cases were bilateral and 45 percent showed metastases to the upper abdomen. In general, patients with ad vanced ovarian cancer should not under go extended surgery or pelvic exentera tion except in extremely rare instances.

TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA The most common facial pain syndrome is trigeminal neuralgia. The pain is brief, lancinating, and located in one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve see Fig. 17 ; . The repetitive jolts of pain can be triggered by tactile stimulation and activities such as brushing the teeth, talking, chewing, kissing, or shaving. Patients often describe a dull ache between the paroxysms of shock-like pain. Pain in the second maxillary ; or third mandibular ; division of the trigeminal nerve often causes the patient to go to dentist. Most cases of primary trigeminal neuralgia occur in persons older than 40 years. A secondary cause is suggested if the person is younger than 40 years and if an abnormality is found on neurologic examination. Investigation involves MRI to exclude the secondary causes of trigeminal neuralgia, such as multiple sclerosis, a mass lesion in the posterior fossa, or an abnormal arterial loop. There are many options for treating trigeminal neuralgia. Effective medications include sodium channel blockers and gamma and metamucil.
Clarification: if pregnancy or an underlying pathological condition such as pelvic malignancy ; is suspected, it must be evaluated and the category adjusted after evaluation.
Not a primary eye irritant. Dust may cause mechanical irritation. Because of the shape of individual wollastonite particles, minor skin irritation may result from prolonged physical contact. Not a sensitizer. Not an ingestion hazard. Inhalation of high concentrations may cause irritation or discomfort and methadone.
| Meprobamate side effectsLeading to the incidence of CV events; and 3 ; an earlier onset and a greater hypertensive effect correlating closely with CV risk Brinker et al., 2004; Solomon et al., 2004b; Wolfe et al., 2004; Fredy et al., 2005 ; . Therefore, it is suggested that rofecoxib could have distinctive mechanisms or more potent toxic activity leading to CV risks, in comparison with other selective COX-2 inhibitors or nonselective NSAIDs. Consequently, it is vital to investigate rofecoxib by comparing it with other selective COX-2 inhibitors to clarify its relevance to increased CV events. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanism for the increased risk of CV events with rofecoxib. McAdam et al. 1999 ; suggested the endothelial prostacyclin PGI2 ; thromboxane A2 TxA2 ; imbalance theory, whereby the CV complications caused by selective COX-2 inhibitors might be partially due to an imbalance of the concentration ratio of two prostanoids with major CV actions: PGI2, a vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation, and TxA2, a vasoconstrictor and promotor of platelet aggregation. That is, selective COX-2 inhibitors diminish the production of PGI2 in the endothelium, but not TxA2 in the platelets, so that the relative concentration of TxA2 increases around the affected area, which might increase the risks. Walter et al. 2004 ; proposed the pro-oxidant effect theory, whereby rofecoxib, which is a sulfone-type COX-2 inhibitor, but not celecoxib sulfonamide-type COX-2 inhibitor ; or nonselective NSAIDs, promotes oxidative damage to low-density lipoprotein and phospholipids in vitro, and this action might lead to atherogenesis in vivo. In addition, Pope et al. 1993 ; and Johnson et al. 1994 and meprobamate.
